The possiblity of changing one’s identity has served and fascinated manhood ever since. In the Stone Age, hunters have donned animal skins to disguise themselves and track down their prey. In Greek mythology, Zeus came in the shape of a bull to carry away beautiful Europa on is back, tricking his suspicious wife Hera. Greeks and Romans alike shared a love for the theater and masque.
Later, kings and queens of all periods celebrated masques at their courts, and the Sun King Louis XIV especially was renowned for his elaborate festivities in Versailles, his guests and courtiers showing off extravagant costumes.
Common people too shared the excitement of taking on a different identity and of dressing up, still reflected today in the many national customs, such as Fasnacht and carnival, providing the possiblity of forgetting everyday routine and to celebrate and revel in disguise.
